Everybody who has lived in Minnesota or Wisconsin knows that the sport of snowmobiling comes with more than its fair share of drinking. On any given day, it is fair to expect that a huge portion of those on snowmobiles have had some alcohol to drink.

It’s more rare, however, that somebody actually gets busted for a Minnesota DWI on a snowmobile.

Fox9 reported that a man was arrested for his 4th DWI charge in Minnesota recently after a snowmobile chase.

The Minnesota DWI alternative to loss of driving privilege seems to be catching on.

If the person agrees to put an interlock device on their vehicle, they can get their license back much sooner that if they don’t.

For many Minneapolis DWI offenders, the loss of the ability to drive is the worse part of the ordeal. For those that commute long distances within the Twin Cities area it can be especially burdensome.

400 Minnesota DWI offenders elect ignition interlock : DUIAttorney.com: “The Minnesota Department of Public Safety administers the program to a wide array of drivers looking to regain driving privileges after a DWI arrest. The typical license suspension on a first-offense DWI, which represents 60% of all DWI cases in the state, is 90 days. Under the new program, after just 15-30 days a person may regain a license by using an ignition interlock instead.”

If the idea is to prevent further MN DWI arrests rather than simply to punish, this new law seems to be a success from all angles.

In Minnesota, there is more at stake criminally than a simple misdemeanor DWI if you drive with a child in the car.

This is the case of a mother who, after she was reported driving erratically, fled from the police in Hennepin County.

Mother flees police during Minnesota DWI arrest : DUIAttorney.com: “Officers noted Say provided a breath sample that determined her blood alcohol level was .17%. She was charged with fleeing police, gross misdemeanor child endangerment and fourth degree driving under the influence. Say has many previous infractions on her record including license suspensions.”

Although Minnesota does not officially consider the act of driving under the influence with a child or children in the vehicle a felony (some oter states do), that may change in the near future.

Minnesota DWI lawyers still face an uphill battle when dealing with such cases because prosecutors can argue that the presence of children in the vehicle after drinking ANYTHING shows poor judgment, and that loss of judgment is a common early effect of alcohol and drug impairment.

The case of the Minnesota DWI arrest in a motorized chair has arguably become the most famous recent drunk driving arrest in MN. It is famous because of the oddity of the whole thing, and the hype over the chair being sold on ebay.

Minnesota “DWI Chair” spurs controversy : DUIAttorney.com: “Ever since 62-year-old Dennis Anderson pleaded guilty to a drunk driving offense that occurred in a motorized lounge chair, the chair itself has been shrouded in controversy.”

But the real question should be a case like that truly warrants a DWI charge in the first place.
